OUR MOTTO, MISSION AND VISION

Wise County Youth Soccer Association is an all volunteer organization dedicated to bringing the game of soccer to the youth of Wise County, the City of Norton and surrounding areas. The motto of Wise County Youth Soccer Association is “Where Every Kid Gets to Play” and that phrase is more than a slogan to us.  This overriding principle affects every aspect of Wise County Soccer Association, from the games and trainings we sponsor to the volunteers we utilize.  We believe whole-heartedly that every child that plays soccer with us is positively impacted by our actions.  Without this solid core value, our mission of bringing soccer to the youth of Wise County limited to just playing and teaching soccer.  With this core value built in to our entire organization, we feel that we can offer character and skill building activities to our youth that promotes healthy living, good citizenship and keen independent decision making skills.  Our vision is to create a safe environment for children to play and be kids, while learning about soccer and life.  We strive to be the best soccer association we can while serving our youth as best we can.

OUR HISTORY

Wise County Youth Soccer Association was formed in 1990 and was originally named the Norton-Wise Youth Soccer Association.  After some time, the association simply became known as Wise County Youth Soccer Association or as more frequently seen on our soccer jerseys “WCYS”.  Although soccer had been played in Wise since the mid-1970’s, the association was the first attempt to organize a league and play under a governing body.  Wise County Youth Soccer Association is an affiliate member of the Virginia Youth Soccer Association, United States Youth Soccer Association and the United States Soccer Federation.  Our home games are played at Veldon Dotson Recreational Park on Airport Rd. in Wise, VA.  Since 1990, we have provided more than 3000 children the opportunity to play the beautiful game in Wise and proudly continue to do so.

OUR ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE

Wise County Youth Soccer is an all volunteer organization that relies on member support to function.  Wise County Youth Soccer Association is an association of the membership by the membership for the benefit of the youth of Wise County.  The association is governed by a set of by-laws and procedures and is stewarded by a nominated Board of Directors.  All persons registering a child with Wise County Youth Soccer Association to play soccer become members of the organization for one year.  Every member receives the benefits of the organization and is entrusted with the responsibility for keeping the organization functional.  Every member is entitled to bring issues before the Board of Directors, volunteer service to the association and vote in any matter presented to the membership.   Board members serve a maximum of two years in any one position.  To preserve the wealth of volunteer experience that has come before us, we also have established an “Emeritus” designation. This designation has been created so that past Board of Directors members may vote on issues before the membership, making use of nearly 30 years of collective experience in providing soccer to Wise County.    It is our hope that our organization is operated in a manner that best serves our youth and functions in a manner that is both transparent to the outside observer and reactive to the memberships needs.

OUR PHILOSOPHY

Aside from the fact that somebody had to “do soccer” in our area, we feel that soccer is a unique sport with unique offerings to our children.  Soccer, unlike many other sports, is not unnecessarily interrupted by a referee, clock or coaches.  Once soccer begins, it relies on the players to make the best decisions they can make at that time.  We take time in practice to allow decision making skills to form and then watch as they are demonstrated on the soccer field.  Our belief is that empowering a child with sound decision making skills will allow that child to enjoy the game more, be a more fulfilled, successful person and that those skills will follow the child into adulthood.  Please join us in watching your children grow in confidence, strength and intellect.
